Year 5 Spring 2023-24

Our class teacher is Mr Tull and our Teaching Assistant is Mrs Goldsack!
I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas holidays, and are excited for the new term. Here's what we have in store!

English

We will be looking at the following:
- Non-Chronological Reports (on Dragons)
- Poetry (Viking Kennings)
- Instructions (How to make a Viking shield)
- Narrative (Suspense)
- Newspaper report (Battle of Hastings)
- Explanation text (Phases of the moon)

As can be seen, a lot of our English work will be based around our topic of the Vikings. We will also be using the following books:

Viking Boy
How to Train a Dragon
Maths

We will be looking at the following topics:

- Multiplication and Division
- Fractions
- Decimals and percentages
- Measure and Perimeter
- Graphs and Tables

How can you help at home in Maths?

- Times table practice is essential to help in a variety of areas of maths, so any support on that at home would be very helpful!

- Fractions is probably the hardest area for the children. We keep recapping it at school, but again regular practice at home will always help!

The Rest of the Curriculum

Our main topic will be the Vikings. We learn all about the Viking invasion of Britain, how the Anglo Saxons tried to repel it, and in general how the way of life of that time period has influenced our current living.

In Science we will be finishing off our topic on Forces, and then moving on to the exciting world of Space! This is always a really interesting topic that hooks the children in, and lots of fun learning will occur!

In Art, we will be linking our work to the Vikings again by thinking about Dragons and the Sea, whilst also practicing the skills of sketching and clay. Our DT topic will be Super Seasonal Cooking, which we will be developing some core cooking skills!
