At Isleham CE Primary School writing is taught every day during discrete Literacy lessons, it is also practised as part of other subjects across the curriculum. Children are given the skills to write confidently and expressively for a range of different purposes.
In each year group children explore a range of genres and text types, including fiction, poetry, information texts, dialogue, plays and biographies .
Teachers give guidance and instruction to children to improve writing skills. This includes grammatical accuracy and correct use of punctuation. We involve pupils in their own learning by sharing assessments with them, agreeing individual targets and sharing success criteria. There are regular opportunities for children to respond to focused feedback and next steps for improving written work.
Spelling patterns are taught frequently and the children practise and improve handwriting weekly. We teach the children to use a cursive handwriting style from Reception Class through to Year 6.
