Reception Spring 2023-24

Spring Term- January 2024

Our topic ‘Superheroes & Villains’ will span the first half of the Spring Term. The topic will begin with familiar people who help us in our own lives before moving on to community helpers and finally fantasy superheroes.

Literacy:

During literacy children will gain information from non-fiction texts and we hope to gain real life experience from encounters with people who help us in our local community. We will then use some fictional texts and our imaginations when entering the world of fantasy superheroes.

Maths

Throughout Maths this half term we will continue exploring numbers through the Numberblocks series, where we will compare numbers, meet zero, develop and understanding pattern and begin our part- whole model journey. By the end of the half term we will also have a clear understanding of weight and 2D shapes.

PE
During our dance unit, children will develop their expressive movement through the topic of 'everyday life'. Children explore space and how to use space safely. They explore travelling movements, shapes and balances. Children choose their own actions in response to a stimulus. They are given the opportunity to copy, repeat and remember actions. They are introduced to counting to help them keep in time with the music. They perform to others and begin to provide simple feedback

Spring 2- February 2024

During the second half term our topic is ‘Into the Woods’, this topic will begin by finding out about texts which are linked to the forest. We will explore some famous texts- Little Red Riding Hood, Foggy Foggy Forest, Stickman and The Gruffalo. We hope to visit Suzie’s Woods lots during this topic to bring our learning to life.

Literacy:

Throughout our literacy learning, we will continue to follow our ‘Song of Sounds journey to build on our phonics knowledge. We will practise reading back the words we have written to ensure they make sense. Use tricky words within our writing and allow information we have read in books to feed into our writing. Across the half term we will have the opportunity to record sentences to recreate our own rhyming foggy forest story and Gruffalo descriptions.

Maths:

Within our Maths learning this term, we will continue to use cross-curricular topics to link all our learning together. We will explore time through ‘What’s the time Mr Wolf?’ during our Little Red Riding hood theme. We will add and subtract eggs at Easter. Whilst doubling and halving with the help of ‘The Gruffalo’ and ‘Stickman’ characters.

PE
During this Fundamentals unit children will develop their fundamental movement skills through the topic of 'all about me'. Fundamental skills will include balancing, running, changing direction, jumping, hopping and travelling. Children will develop gross motor skills through a range of activities. They will learn how to stay safe using space, follow rules and instructions and work independently and with a partner.
