2021 - 2022 Year 4 Class

 Welcome to the Year 4 Class of 2021-22 with Ms Sassoli, Miss Bottomley, Mrs Deacon, Mrs White and Mrs Norbury.
Our topic for the SUMMER TERM is FENLAND LIFE!

We live in a geographically interesting area of Britain: the Fens. This half term Year 4 will explore their local area further by finding out about the geography and history of the village of Isleham. We will also be learning about the development of the Fens, the importance of farming in our region, and discovering more about the Isleham Hoard and the Littleport Riots. We will explore our local area with a guided tour, study the landscape in art and attempt to grow our own produce!

In English our class reader is The Wild Robot by Peter Brown. Here the main character - Roz - explores a new landscape, a remote island. She learns how to adapt and survive, making links with our science unit about changing environments and the impact of man-made and natural physical changes.

In writing we will be considering story setting descriptions, information texts, persuasive texts and poetry.

Our topic for the Spring Term is the Stone Age!
We will be exploring this fascinating period in history across the curriculum. In history we will study early housing and in DT we will learn about structures and build our own dens! In art we'll be studying the use of natural paints as we learn about cave art and create our own examples of pre-historic jewellery and in Geography Year 4 will learn how early humans transitioned, over thousands of years, from hunter-gatherers who roamed the land to farmers who lived in settlements.
In English our class reader is Stig of the Dump. The story will inspire a number of written pieces; news reports, stories with a historical setting and poetry. 
In mathematics we begin the spring term looking at multiplication and division before moving on to area, fractions and decimals. The overview for each PowerMaths unit is shown in the images below. These give more detail about the vocabulary covered and the main learning points of each unit. 
As well as our daily mathematics lesson, children will spend time in addition learning times tables for rapid recall and engaging with activities to build their mathematical vocabulary - known as 'Maths Eyes'.

Autumn Term
In English this term we will be writing Greek myths, discussion texts about the Parthenon Marbles, explanation texts, recounts and poetry. Our whole class novel - Who Let the Gods Out - will be read throughout the term. In grammar lessons, the apostrophe, fronted adverbials and expanded noun phrases will be considered in the context of longer pieces of writing. Handwriting will be linked to weekly spelling lists. We hope to provide a rich literacy diet!
Our curriculum drivers this term are history and geography. This term we will be answering the BIG question - what did we learn from the Ancient Greeks? Using different sources of evidence we will explore this ancient period in history and discover its wonders! In geography we will find out more about the location of the world's countries, with a particular focus on Europe. We will use maps, atlases, globes and digital/computer mapping to locate countries and describe the human and physical features studied.
In mathematics we continue to use the PowerMaths scheme to support learning. This term our unit foci include; place value; addition and subtraction; measurement - perimeter; and multiplication and division. Further information about the content of each unit can be seen in the images above. 
We continue to use the PowerMaths scheme and this term topics include: decimals, money, time, statistics, angles, 2D shapes and direction. As always, we will continue to post on to Class Dojo each unit overview for you to explore the upcoming vocabulary.
With just a short time until the multiplication check, please continue to support the learning of times tables at home. Some children have gone from strength to strength this year and we appreciate the effort parents are making to support this area of learning – it really makes a difference in so many areas of mathematics when tables can be recalled at speed. All children have now been assigned to the ‘automatic training’ setting on TT Rockstars (rather than set to own targets), this enables children to progress through the tables, with the programme analysing responses in order to intelligently add new facts as each is secured. 
During the science unit about human digestion, the class represented the process using items from home.  
Firstly the food was broken into smaller pieces by a plate and fork to represent the teeth.  Saliva was added (water).
The food was swallowed down the oesophagus into the stomach, through a tube and into a plastic bag.  Once in the bag the food was squashed and squeezed, showing the action of the stomach.
Once a few more enzymes were added (hand sanitiser and coloured squash) the digested food was sent down the small and large intestine. (a pair of tights!)
To finally represent the action of releasing undigested food out of the anus, the tights were cut.  
In science children will learn about the digestive system in humans and animals and the functions of teeth. Children will learn more about herbivores, carnivores and omnivores in the context of teeth, digestion and the food chain. In addition, they will extend their understanding of food chains to more complex chains and food webs.
In the second half of term, children find out about the differences between solids, liquids and gases, classifying objects and identifying their properties. Children will investigate the weight of a gas and to find the ideal temperature to melt chocolate. They will explore in-depth how water changes state, exploring melting, freezing, condensing as well as a particular focus on evaporation. Finally, they will learn about the stages of the water cycle, creating mini water worlds and an interactive water wheel to represent the different stages.
