2020-21 Year 2

Miss Stanley, Mrs Rayner and Mrs Davison welcome you to
the Year 2 Class of 2020.
Please check back here regularly for news
of what is happening in Year 2 this year.
Throughout the autumn term 2020, our Year 2 children achieved a great deal, despite the needed Covid-19-safety measures in place, and the confinement to their class bubble.
Some fantastic progress was seen for each individual child
and shared with you in the autumn term reports to parents, virtual class assembly
and via ClassDojo, and in our newsletters. It was also wonderful to see the children's Nativity play video at Christmas time.
In the Spring term 2021, we were frustrated that due to the national lockdown, most of our children were required to stay at home again from the 5th January 2021 and carry out remote learning in place of learning on site, but it was great to see the amazing work submitted by our Year 2 children, guided by the videos and tasks put together by Miss Stanley and the team, and thanks to a lot of support from the children's wonderful parents!
The children's learning & development has really been able to continue throughout the 2021 lockdown as a result of all the work put in by school staff and families. The children's ClassDojo portfolios provide wonderful evidence of this. Thank you all.
Our school fully re-opened on 8th March 2021.
It has been so wonderful to have the Year 2 children all back in school again.
We will update our website class pages shortly with overviews for the summer term and details of curriculum information sessions to be run by the staff in April to let you know what is planned for the summer term back in school.

Summer Term

Welcome back to the Summer term. I hope you all had a relaxed Easter holidays and are ready for another term in Year 2.

As we enter into the first half of the summer term we will be are going to spend 2 additional weeks on our spring topic of dinosaurs. We will be learning about the possible theories the dinosaurs became extinct and writing letters to warn the dinosaurs of this. We will then look at writing some instructions explaining how to look after a dinosaur. As well as this, we will explore the evidence which exists to show that dinosaurs roamed the earth and create our own fossils.
In Year 2 we have been learning about the dinosaurs. We learnt about ammonite fossils and decided we’d like to make some of our own. In art, we found out about sculpting and how some artists such as Barbara Hepworth created sculptures from stone. We decided to use soap for our sculptures. We carefully sculpted the round shape of the ammonite first, then we added the spiral detail. We are going to add the final details next week!
This week (beginning 19.4.21) we enjoyed National Skipping Week. Here are some of us practising our new skills. The focus of this event is determination and self-belief.
In our music lessons we are enjoying using a range of instruments such as glockenspiels, electronic systems and even cups!
We listened to Mars by Gustav Holst. Music helps us keep calm and carry on. It helps us focus and daydream, sleep and dance, and especially it helps us make art! We considered how might sound be reflected through art while listening to 'Mars'. Here are some of our results!
In our new topic of 'Beside the Seaside we have learnt about how to produce an observational drawing in art. We started by looking at the main shapes we could see and drawing these lightly with our pencils. We then looked at the fish many times and added details to our drawings. We were so proud of them
We loved decorating beach huts for our new swimming pool changing rooms!
On Monday 14th June we took part in a triathlon. We ran, 'scooted' and swam all in one day! Well done to all who took part and thank you to those who sponsored us.
We have started learning about plants. We learned about The Gigantic Turnip and enjoyed joining in with the repeated phrases. We used the structure to write our own giant vegeatble stories.
We then started thinking about instructions and learned that clear instructions are very important. We followed instructions carefully to grow beans in bags. We wonder if they will become GIANT!
Year 2 have been busy in music this half term. They have been learning a friendship song written for Charanga Music School by Joanna Mangona and Pete Readman. The song tells us how helping each other and being kind is vitally important in friendship. The children appraised the music and then began to learn instruments to play along to the backing track. They learnt how to keep a steady rythm with hand drums, how to play the notes on a glockenspiel and some children tried using a cup to make music. This is our BRILLIANT outcome. Enjoy our performance!
We had a lovely day with 'Phunky Foods' today learning about healthy breakfasts and the amount of sugar in cereals. We then had the opportunity to make our own healthy breakfast pot.
